I teach Drawing, Visual Communication and Adobe Creative Cloud at UAL.
I’m looking forward to my time studying for the PgCert which will help me explore more ways to teach Drawing and Creativity, with a particular regard to the gap between the Analogue and Digital realms. I very much appreciate the opportunity to study the academic aspects in more depth, and to discover new theories and approaches.
I enjoy working with students to explore Analogue Drawing as the foundation for all creative endeavour, focussing on the process rather than the result; a way of thinking through making rather than using initial conceptualisation. Drawing directly with a pencil is an immediate and straightforward way to express our ideas, emotions, plans and all the things we want to communicate about the world around and within us. The lack of distraction and immediacy can also give the Analogue Drawing process an element of Mindfulness, which aids Mental Health and also encourages open-minded Creativity and direction. A (quite often) slow unfurling of discovery.
I also encourage students to visualise and develop concepts, and their creative identity, by combining both Analogue and Digital methods.
I have found that Students often use Digital means for their whole creative process, from Creation to Realisation, and are not engaged fully with Analogue methods. Living a large part of their lives online, using Social Media and making and consuming images Digitally is second nature to them. Finding methods to contextualise this Digital mindset within Creative Practice to incorporate more Analogue work I find very fulfilling and enriching, and I hope it gives students a more rounded and expanded Creative Practice.
I would like to expand my knowledge of innovative methods over the course of studying for the PgCert, including designing Drawing, Visualisation and Concept Development sessions which flow back and forth through the Analogue and Digital realms freely, experimentally and openly, with the students’ final Creative Intention being either independent of, or related directly to the Media.
Artificial Intelligence is becoming increasingly important in many areas of life, and I would also like to explore ways to incorporate it into my practice, in conjuction with Analogue work.
I’m also looking forward to engaging with other practitioners on the course, who have different perspectives and experience, and are from other parts of UAL.
